Meet Chris Purvis—an inspiring Port Orange local who turned a life‑threatening heart attack into a powerful comeback. Through dedicated Muay Thai and BJJ training at Stadium MMA, he transformed his health, strength, and spirit. Keep reading to discover his full transformation story that could change how you see mixed martial arts, resilience, and community.

  1. Chris, can you briefly share your background and life before joining Stadium MMA in Port Orange?

I was out of shape, tired with no endurance, and overweight (about 260 pounds).  I had a heart attack before turning 50, and by the Grace of God beat the “widow maker” and was suddenly on 11 medications.  I had a second chance and was not going to waste it.  Within a year of joining Stadium, I lost over 50 pounds, and cut my medications in half, gained endurance and lean muscle, my lab results are now normal.  My cardiologist says there’s no evidence I had a heart attack.

  2. What initially drove you to join a Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu gym in your 50s?

The main reason I initially joined Stadium is for the health benefits. I thought to myself, I’m going to be a year older anyway, I might as well be a year older, healthier, and have some MMA skills.  I also needed something different to break the monotony of going to a 9 to 5 desk job.   It’s an awesome bonus that my sons are also interested and joined Stadium MMA as well.

  3. How did training at Stadium MMA help you turn your health around—and your doctor say you look like someone never had a heart attack?

First, I think it was the cardio that helped me to lose the weight.  Because I was also having fun and learning skills, I was not hyper-focused on cardio, it just happened!  Treadmills have always been a little boring for me and I wouldn’t stick with that kind of cardio.  As mentioned above, I lost over 50 pounds, my labs are normal, and my cardiologist says there’s no evidence that I ever had a heart attack.

  4. What role did Muay Thai vs. Jiu‑Jitsu play in your journey? How did training in both arts complement each other for your fitness and wellness?

I’m definitely more confident, and not just in my appearance but more confident in general.  I have focus and clarity in my life, and I handle difficult situations with more emotional maturity.  I am in a better place mentally.

  5. You also competed in local tournaments—can you describe how it felt walking onto the mats with Stadium MMA cheering you on?

I was nervous and wasn’t exactly sure what to expect in my first tournament.  The coaches and crew from Stadium MMA showed up in force and it was awesome to have them in my corner.  I didn’t win, but I actually did much better than I anticipated.

  6. How has your confidence, mindset, or daily energy changed since joining the gym?

I noticed a big difference in my energy level.  Now I wake up with more energy and a positive outlook about the day.  I definitely did not have that before I started training.  I also think I carry myself differently, head up and shoulders back, ready for any challenge.

  7. What stands out most about Stadium MMA’s team culture and how did you find your role as a leader in that community?

While training can get a little intense sometimes, we all help each other and we’re still brothers/sisters at the end of class.  The coaches are always watching and mentoring.  I train 6 days a week, and I think my consistency and dedication are contagious.  I have also raised three sons which, I think, has helped me connect with the younger students.

  8. For someone living in Daytona or Port Orange over 50 considering martial arts for fitness or self-defense—what would you tell them?

It’s never too late to start training Muay Thai or BJJ.  And don’t worry about starting out as a beginner, we all started out as beginners and know what it’s like.  We are always learning and perfecting skills.  While you are focusing on the training, the fitness, strength, and endurance just naturally follows.  It’s great.  I feel good knowing that I am better able to protect myself and my family if needed.

  9. How would you describe Stadium MMA coaching—Coach Kelly, Coach Paul—in helping you learn technique, stay safe, and progress?

First, the coaches are knowledgeable.  Coach Kelly spent time training in Thailand.  They are patient, respectful, and always watching and  safeguarding against injuries.  The energy in the gym is great.  There are no egos, ever. All are welcome.

  10. What words do you use now when people call Muay Thai or BJJ just a “workout” instead of the life-changing skill development and community you’ve experienced?

Muay Thai and BJJ is a team environment.  You aren’t on a treadmill for an hour, just alone inside your own head.  You have to think fast, anticipate, form a strategy.  It feels good to learn and practice a skill/submission, then apply it on the mat.  While also being challenging and fun.

  11. Have you inspired anyone else in the gym or your personal life to take up Muay Thai or Jiu‑Jitsu—and what was their reaction?

Well, I hope I inspire others to show up consistently.  Even if you aren’t really feeling it that day, just show up.  You’ll be glad you did and feel better afterwards.  Those that know me have seen my transformation over the last two years.  It sounds cliché, but hard work really does pay off.

  12. What keeps you motivated to stay consistent after two years of training? How does Stadium MMA help you stay on track every week?

In the beginning, after the first few weeks of Muay Thai and BJJ, I was hooked.  It was just different than anything I had ever done before.  The changes I’ve experienced in my overall health keep me coming back.  The coaches are always positive and encouraging.  Sometimes they change things up and hold training on the beach.  With Muay Thai and BJJ training, there’s always something new to learn
